Dan and Jennifer Taylor are a lot like most parents: They want their children to be educated and understand the world around them. Unlike a lot of other parents, however, the Taylors have decided that the best way to get that education is to go to the horse’s mouth–wherever in the US that mouth might be.

Last December the Taylors made a $135,000 investment in the children’s education.family-tour.jpg They bought a Class A motorhome and started planning a year-long educational odyssey for 8-year old Mason and 6-year old Griffin. A few days ago, the day after one of Memphis, Tennessee’s rare snowfalls, off they went.

To chronicle, and share their experiences, Don (an Internet technician) has built a website and forum–you can find it here. Called “Driven to Educate,” the website’s subtitle is certainly appropriate, “A Field Trip Across America.” No doubt there’ll be plenty of “home schoolers” who’ll be green with envy, while we daresay a lot of us RVers will be rooting for the Taylors and their offspring.

If you’re not ready to hit the road with the kiddies for a year, here’s a book that might help you do some of the prep work.  “Camping With Kids,”  is filled with helpful hints on how to make your RV journey with young ones fun for all.  Available on-line at RV Bookstore.

[…] Most fulltimers travel without kids. That’s partially because by the time a couple can afford to fulltime, the kids are grown. But here’s a pair of working RVers who have decided to take their two children on the road for a year. What about school? Well, read on. […]
